This study extends the examination of moral content in the media by exploring moral messages in television programming and viewer characteristics predictive of the ability to perceive such messages. Generalisability analyses confirmed the reliability of the Media’s Moral Messages (MMM) rating form for analysing programme content and the existence of 10 moral themes prevalent in television media. Standard regression analyses yielded evidence indicating viewers’ moral expertise, as measured by the Defining Issues Test (DIT), familiarity with the programme and level of (...) education predicted their ability to perceive moral messages in a television drama popular in the USA at the time of data collection. Identification of patterns in moral content represented in television programming, as well as knowledge of how viewer characteristics relate to their ability to perceive such content, can provide parents and educators with a means for better comprehending messages regarding human interaction to which they or their children are exposed. Good informal arguments offer justification for their conclusions. They go wrong if the justifications double back, rendering the arguments circular. Circularity, however, is not necessarily a single property of an argument, but may depend on (a) whether the argument repeats an earlier claim, (b) whether the repetition occurs within the same line of justification, and (c) whether the claim is properly grounded in agreed‐upon information. The experiments reported here examine whether people take these factors into account in their judgments of (...) whether arguments are circular and whether they are reasonable. The results suggest that direct judgments of circularity depend heavily on repetition and structural role of claims, but only minimally on grounding. Judgments of reasonableness take repetition and grounding into account, but are relatively insensitive to structural role. (shrink)

After a decades-long economic slump, the city of Flint, Michigan, struggled to address chronic issues of toxic water supply, malnutrition, and food security gaps among its residents. A community-engaged research project proposed a resilience assessment that would use panarchy theory to move the city toward a more sustainable food system. Flint is one of many examples that demonstrates how panarchy theory is being applied to understand and influence change in complex human-natural systems. If people believe that one activity is a kind of another, they also tend to believe that the second activity is a part of the first. For example, they assert that deciding is a kind of thinking and that thinking is a part of deciding. C. Fellbaum and G. A. Miller's (see record 1991-03356-001) explanation for this phenomenon is based on the idea that people interpret part of in the domain of verbs as a type of logical entailment. Their explanation, (...) however, suffers from at least 2 deficiencies. First, it fails to account for parallel effects with nouns (e.g., a contest is a kind of an activity, and an activity is a part of a contest). Second, it contains a flaw that incorrectly predicts many activities to be parts of each other (e.g., coming is part of going and going part of coming). However, a hypothesis L. J. Rips and F. G. Conrad (see record 1989-24843-001) originally proposed for the kind–part reciprocal effect avoids both of these difficulties. (shrink)

Each essay is a comprehensive introduction to the thought of a noted American on the fundamental meaning of the American regime.

Adolf Grünbaum, following J.J.C. Smart, has argued that the A‐Theory of time is untenable due to its inability to answer the question, uniquely attending the A‐theory, as to why it is now 2000. I argue, however, that Grünbaum's explication of the question's meaning makes the question a triviality. But there may be lurking here a somewhat different question, which is meaningful on a A‐Theory of time, the answer to which may have surprising implications concerning the past infinitude of time.

A recursive enumerator for a function h is an algorithm f which enumerates for an input x finitely many elements including h(x), f is a k(n)-enumerator if for every input x of length n, h(x) is among the first k(n) elements enumerated by f. If there is a k(n)-enumerator for h then h is called k(n)-enumerable. We also consider enumerators which are only A-recursive for some oracle A. We determine exactly how hard it is to enumerate the Kolmogorov function, which (...) assigns to each string x its Kolmogorov complexity: • For every underlying universal machine U, there is a constant a such that C is k(n)-enumerable only if k(n) ≥ n/a for almost all n. • For any given constant k, the Kolmogorov function is k-enumerable relative to an oracle A if and only if A is at least as hard as the halting problem. • There exists an r.e., Turing-incomplete set A such for every non-decreasing and unbounded recursive function k, the Kolmogorov function is k(n)-enumerable relative to A. The last result is obtained by using a relativizable construction for a nonrecursive set A relative to which the prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity differs only by a constant from the unrelativized prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity. Although every 2-enumerator for C is Turing hard for K, we show that reductions must depend on the specific choice of the 2-enumerator and there is no bound on the quantity of their queries. We show our negative results even for strong 2-enumerators as an oracle where the querying machine for any x gets directly an explicit list of all hypotheses of the enumerator for this input. The limitations are very general and we show them for any recursively bounded function g: • For every Turing reduction M and every non-recursive set B, there is a strong 2-enumerator f for g such that M does not Turing reduce B to f. • For every non-recursive set B, there is a strong 2-enumerator f for g such that B is not wtt-reducible to f. Furthermore, we deal with the resource-bounded case and give characterizations for the class ${\rm S}_{2}^{{\rm P}}$ introduced by Canetti and independently Russell and Sundaram and the classes PSPACE, EXP. • ${\rm S}_{2}^{{\rm P}}$ is the class of all sets A for which there is a polynomially bounded function g such that there is a polynomial time tt-reduction which reduces A to every strong 2-enumerator for g. • PSPACE is the class of all sets A for which there is a polynomially bounded function g such that there is a polynomial time Turing reduction which reduces A to every strong 2-enumerator for g. Interestingly, g can be taken to be the Kolmogorov function for the conditional space bounded Kolmogorov complexity. • EXP is the class of all sets A for which there is a polynomially bounded function g and a machine M which witnesses A ∈ PSPACEf for all strong 2-enumerators f for g. Finally, we show that any strong O(log n)-enumerator for the conditional space bounded Kolmogorov function must be PSPACE-hard if P = NP. (shrink)

David Friedrich Strauss is a central figure in 19th century intellectual history. The first major source for the loss of faith in Christianity in Germany, his work Das Leben Jesu was the most scandalous publication in Germany during his time. His book was a critique of the claims to historical truth of the New Testament, which had been the mainstay of Protestantism since the Reformation. As the father of unbelief, his critique of Christianity preceded that of Nietzsche, Marx, Feuerbach, and (...) Schopenhauer. His views imposed a harsh fate upon him - he was persecuted for his beliefs by religious and political authorities and was denied employment in the university and government, forcing him to live as a free-lance writer. He led a wandering and isolated life as an outcast. Here, Frederick C. Beiser studies the intellectual development of Strauss and recounts his fate, which began in faith as a young man but finally ended in unbelief. (shrink)

Cyclist Lance Armstrong cheated his way to seven Tour de France . Such cheating is wrong because it harms society. To explain how that harm affects all of us, I use Aristotle's ideas of virtue ethics to argue that Armstrong, despite his charitable work, is not a virtuous person. Virtue is to some extent determined by society, so we need to be clear that Armstrong is not a person to emulate. A society which does not clearly disapprove of vice (...) is less than it might otherwise be because a good society is one that encourages virtue in its citizens. (shrink)

Some people have found my distinction between meaning and significance useful. In the following revision of that distinction, I hope to improve its accuracy and perhaps, therefore, its utility as well. My impulse for making the revision has been my realization, very gradually achieved, that meaning is not simply an affair of consciousness and unconsciousness. In 1967, in Validity in Interpretation, I roundly asserted that “there is no magic land of meanings outside human consciousness.” 1 That assertion would be true (...) if, godlike, we could oversee the whole of human consciousness, past, present, and future. But we language users, being limited creatures, intend our verbal meanings to go beyond what we can pay attention to at any moment. We intend our meanings to transcend our momentary limitations of attention and knowledge. Hence there is a land of meanings beyond past and present human consciousness—the land of the future. What I should have said originally is that there is no magic lance of meanings beyond the whole extent of human consciousness, past, present, and future. This correction of my original statements leads to a deepening of the concept of meaning.In 1960 I first proposed the analytical distinction between two aspects of textual interpretation. One of them, meaning, was fixed and immutable; the other, significance, was open to change.2 I acknowledged that significance, changeable or not, is the more valuable object of interpretation, because it typically embraces the present use of texts, and present use is present value. But I argued that, in academic criticism, the significance and use of a text ought to be rooted in its fixed meaning, since otherwise criticism would lack a stable object of inquiry and would merely float on tides of preference. The claim that one reader’s opinion is as valid as another’s would then be right, despite any indignant protest to the contrary. I did not wish to dissuade people from floating on the tides of preference if that was what they wished to do. I intended to provide a firm justification for those who wished to pursue historical scholarship. 3 I also assumed that even those who did not pursue historical scholarship might sometimes wish to exploit the possibility of historically fixed meaning. In my experience, even antiauthorial theorists sometimes with to regard their own texts as having a historically fixed meaning and will complain if someone misunderstands that meaning. 1. E. D. C'est le pari que lance cet ouvrage : confrontant Merleau-Ponty à d'autres qui vinrent après lui, et chez qui sa pensée mène une vie seconde, il tente (...) de montrer que le paysage conceptuel merleau-pontien est encore le nôtre, et qu'il n'a rien perdu de son relief. Merleau-Ponty et Foucault, Merleau-Ponty et Bourdieu, Merleau-Ponty et les neurones miroirs... : autant de dialogues fictifs, engageant l'essentiel d'une pensée dans des prolongements inattendus, lui posant des questions qu'elle ne se posait pas forcément, la poussant sur des chemins nouveaux pour elle. Où l'on verra que l'étonnante torsion que Merleau-Ponty avait imprimée à la phénoménologie husserlienne, la subjectivité transcendantale réformée depuis les pouvoirs du corps propre, et par là délestée de ses tentations absolutisantes, représentent une véritable proposition philosophique: une proposition riche de virtualités inexplorées, et qui a tout son avenir devant elle. In actual fact it is not a definition of mysticism at all but of the Arabic word tawḥīd which means primarily ‘the affirmation of unity’; and that surely is an essential ingredient of any form of mysticism: it is the (...) affirmation through personal experience of unity either absolutely or in some qualified sense. As everyone knows, since the end of the Second World War there has been a sensational revival of interest in the non-Christian religions particularly in the United States and in this country. The revival has taken two forms, the one popular, the other academic. The first of these has turned almost exclusively to Hindu and Buddhist mysticism and can be seen as an energetic reaction against the dogmatic and until very recently rigid structure of institutionalised Christianity and a search for (...) a lived experience of the freedom of the spirit which is held to be the true content of mysticism, obscured in Christianity by the basic dogma of a transcendent God, the ‘wholly Other’ of Rudolf Otto and his numerous followers, but wholly untrammelled by any such concept in the higher reaches of Vedanta and Buddhism, particularly in its Zen manifestation. On the academic side the picture is less clear. There is, of course, the claim that the study of religion, like any other academic study, must be subjected to and controlled by the same principles of ‘scientific’ objectivity to which the other ‘arts’ subjects have been subjected, to their own undoing. But even here there would seem to be a bias in favour of the religions of India and the Far East as against Islam, largely, one supposes, in response to popular demand. (shrink)

Résumé Depuis 1959, Pierre Parlebas tente de développer une éducation physique scientifique centrée sur la personne qui se meut et non plus sur le mouvement produit ou observé. La pierre angulaire de ce virage copernicien est un concept plein de résonances sémiologiques: la conduite motrice, entendue comme « organisation signifiante du comportement moteur ». En fait, sa proposition pédagogique est toujours allée de pair avec un projet épistémologique dont le noyau dur est une sémiologie de la motricité, c’est à dire (...) une « semiotricité ». Si l’action motrice est le fer de lance de l’éducation physique la sémiotricité, c’est le fer de lance de la praxéologie motrice. Cinquante ans après son démarrage, nous proposons revisiter les fondements de cette conception de l’éducation physique qui reste aujourd’hui révolutionnaire. La sémiologie de la motricité est née sous l’égide de la Sorbonne du milieu du XXe siècle. Les principes du sémiologie linguistique de Saussure inspirent les concepts et les modèles de « un champ du signe discordant » qui bénéficie également des contributions d’autres auteurs pertinents du moment. Cependant, à cette époque, le pragmatisme et la sémiotique américains étaient bien connus. Une question se pose aussitôt: à quoi ressemblerait une sémiotricité triadique? Les processus de communication praxique déclenchent phénomènes d’anticipation et préaction motrices basés en une continuelle interprétation des intentions d’autrui. Paradoxalement, autant ces phénomènes communicatifs que les signes propres des situations ludomotrices peuvent être plus facilement conçus et analysés avec un modèle plus complexe, voire triadique, que nous aimerions partager avec sémioticiens et praxéologues. Il veut reprendre l'ancien rêve d'une éthique more geometrico, telle que Spinoza en a lancé le projet en plein cœur de la « révolution scientifique » et reposer avec lui la seule question qui vaille au fond : qu'est-ce que « bien vivre »? De son modèle, il retient que ce « bien » ne doit pas être pensé comme une norme extérieure au désir des hommes, mais y prend au contraire sa source, de sorte que l'éthique est inséparable d'une théorie des affects et des désirs. Mais il veut le faire dans un cadre qui n'est plus celui d'une confiance absolue dans l'usage des formalismes, ni dans la capacité de l'homme à dévoiler les « lois de la nature » ou à détenir le secret des « lois de la pensée ». « Éthique locale » ne signifie d'abord que cette provocation à penser la possibilité d'une éthique rationnelle et systématique sans accepter le point de vue de surplomb, « global », que permettait la douce assurance d'un régime transparent du monde à la raison dont les deux premières parties de l'Éthique sont profondément empreintes. La Metaphysique d'Aristote culmine dans le livre Lambda (XII). Il resume les livres precedents, puis se lance dans une fantastique description de Dieu, Premier moteur immobile de l'univers et Penser se pensant soi-meme. Le premier a nous en avoir laisse un commentaire est Themistius, au IVe siecle. Entre lui et l'epoque d'Averroes, d'Albert le Grand, de Thomas d'Aquin, rien ne nous est reste sur Lambda. Themistius paraphrase le texte et y mele de tres importantes digressions. L'original grec est perdu. (...) De la traduction arabe, nous n'avons que des fragments. Mais elle avait ete integralement traduite en hebreu. C'est a partir de ces deux sources que Remi Brague propose ici une traduction litterale, avec une introduction et des notes explicatives. Dans cet article, nous examinons l’hypothèse selon laquelle la conception de la technique se transforme dans la pensée allemande après la Première Guerre mondiale, en particulier en ce qui concerne la relation entre la technique et l’histoire. À gauche, cette transformation passe par la critique benjaminienne de toute conception progressiste de la technique – critique qui anticipe ce que Günther Anders appellera plus tard le « décalage prométhéen ». La pensée conservatrice allemande se lance quant à elle dans un (...) éloge anti-progressiste du progrès technique (c’est le cas par exemple d’Ernst Jünger et d’Oswald Spengler). L’acceptabilité sociale est devenue un élément incontournable pour la réalisation de projets de mise en valeur du territoire et des ressources naturelles. Elle constitue bien souvent le cœur des préoccupations des investisseurs, des communautés, des instances régionales et gouvernementales, des citoyens, du milieu des affaires et des groupes environnementaux. Le ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles, par sa mission de gardien du territoire public et de soutien au développement de projets de mise en valeur des ressources énergétiques et minières, (...) est directement concerné par ces préoccupations. À l’automne 2014, le Ministère a lancé le chantier sur l’acceptabilité sociale. Les pistes de réflexion qui se sont dégagées de cet exercice ont permis d’élaborer des orientations visant à améliorer ses pratiques en la matière. Le Ministère a fait connaître ces orientations en février 2016 dans son Livre vert et prévoit la tenue de consultations particulières en commission parlementaire. (shrink)

Cet article a comme objetif analyser les liens possibles entre deux thèmes de grande relevance de la philosophie de Nicolas de Cues : la théophanie comme manifestation de Dieu et la filiatione dei ou visio Dei, comme modes de clairvoyance de l'infini divin. Cette « voie divine » de la connaissance est la fin d'un voyage où la créature « court » vers le fondement radical qui se révèle em tant que présence infinie dans le fini grâce une « vision (...) » intellectuelle. Le principe de la non-contradiction doit donc être remplacé par celui de la coïncidence des contraires ; cependant, ce dernier doit finalement être dépassé par l'ignorance savante. A son tour, selon Nicolas de Cues, dans cette vision théophanique, le « ne pas savoir » de la créature coincide avec le « savoir » que Dieu a de lui-même, c'est-à-dire de sa connaissance de soi comme infini et non pas en tant qu’une chose parmi d’autres. Dans la tradition néoplatonicienne latine, l’univers théorique où gravitent les concepts de monè, proódos et epistrophé (manence, procession et retour), Nicolas de Cues apporte cependant des nouveautés par rapport à ses prédécesseurs, comme Jean Scot Erigène, puisqu'il se lance dans une tentative ambitieuse d’utiliser la négativité comme outil d'un « discours ignorant » radical, c'est-à-dire un discours qui cherche une expression positive de la « racine » de cette relation paradoxale Créateur-créature. A travers l'itinéraire d'élaboration des noms divins et des énigmes de plus en plus « capables » d'orienter l'intellect vers cette vision du principe incompréhensible dans sa relation active de création/vision avec l'Univers, le Cardinal parcourt le chemin philosophique proposé dans son De coniecturis : une recherche sans fin de l'expression positive de Dieu à travers la négativité visant dépasser l’anonymat classique qui caractérise la tradition néoplatonicienne. The article shows, that the hermeneutical conceptions of H.-G. Gadamer, C. G. Jung and J. Derrida share the dialectic, imaginative and projecting conception of human experience. In this context Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics and Jung’s hermeneutically oriented analytical psychology emphasize the great importance of tradition, as well as of the mythical thought, and investigate the sense of human life which cannot be resolved by exact sciences, but can only be expe-rienced. The author argues that the hermeneutical theories of Gadamer, Jung and (...) Derrida are closely connected with the analogous conceptions of the temporality and of the finitude of the human being. Special attention is also paid to Gadamer’s theory of the organic time. This theory, as well as Jung’s theory of individuation, is based on the conception of the cyclical process of life, a perpetual renewal of ba-lance and a recurrent return to the beginning, regeneration and rebirth. Therefore Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics and Jung’s hermeneutically oriented philosophy are prospective, stressing the most profound forms of temporal experience. According to the author we can find a certain analogy between Jung’s view on the energetic character of the world reality and Gadamer’s conception of the dialectical character of sprachliches Geschehen as the medium of hermeneutical ontology. The last part of the article reconstructs the hermeneutical aspects of J. Derrida’s philosophical thought and its importance for the theory of interpretation and for the crosscultural communication. Louis Bautain (1796–1867) has been described as the “French Newman” because of the resemblances between their lives and writings. This essay compares three aspects of the thought of Newman and Bautain: their respective understanding of faith, reason, and development. Both thinkers understood faith and reason in relation to conversion and the realities of life and viewed faith and reason as functioning in tandem with doctrinal development.

Cet article examine la place du concept d’impartialité dans les théories délibératives de la démocratie. C’est à partir de certaines critiques féministes que sont discutés deux défis lancés à la théorie délibérative et qui sont étroitement liés : le premier porte essentiellement sur le critère du raisonnable et l’idée d’offre de raisons ; le second concerne les circonstances sociales et politiques contingentes dans lesquelles les perspectives des groupes marginalisés peuvent influencer le jugement des autres citoyens. Finalement, les implications de tels changements pour nos notions plus générales de vertu et de responsabilité de la citoyenneté sont examinées.This article examines the place of the concept of impartiality in theories of deliberative democracy. Drawing on and extending recent feminist critiques of deliberative democracy, it explores two interrelated challenges to deliberative theory, one focused on the standard of reasonableness and the idea of reason-giving and the other on the contingent social and political circumstances under which marginalized-groups perspectives may sway the judgment of other citizens. Finally, some of the changes required of deliberative theory to address these concerns are discussed, and the implications of these changes for our more general notions of the virtues and responsibilities of citizenship are explored. Michel Foucault n'est pas réputé être un théoricien de l'Etat, mais un penseur du pouvoir partout où il se trouve (dans l'école, la prison, la caserne, l'usine, l'hôpital). Et pourtant, il apparaît qu'il s'était lancé dans une grande généalogie de l'Etat moderne. Cet ouvrage se propose de dissiper ce paradoxe en démontrant deux choses. Oui, il existe bel et bien une théorie foucaldienne de l'Etat : elle n'est ni systématique ni achevée, mais on peut la reconstituer tant à partir de (...) la fabuleuse richesse des textes de Foucault qu'en le faisant dialoguer avec de grandes entreprises voisines, venues de la philosophie et des sciences sociales : le marxisme, Weber, Elias et Bourdieu, entre autres. Oui, la généalogie est compatible avec la sociologie. Les concepts de biopolitique, discipline, pastorale, gouvernementalité ne sont pas autre chose que des outils pour saisir l'étatisation des rapports de pouvoir, c'est-à-dire les processus de monopolisation politique qui, du Moyen Age à nos jours, sont au principe de nos prétendus Léviathans en Europe. L'Etat? Non pas le plus froid de tous les monstres froids, ni seulement un grand appareil répressif, mais l'effet et l'opérateur de gouvernementalités multiples, de rationalités hétérogènes, de dispositifs variés. Ceci n'est pas un nouveau livre sur Foucault. C'est un livre sur l'Etat et la possibilité toujours vivante d'en faire une théorie, retrempée dans l'eau acide de la généalogie. (shrink)

Les études présentées dans ce volume portent sur des sujets empruntés à des domaines très divers : ceux-ci mettent en jeu des questions concernant la vie, la réalité sociale, la connaissance dont le traitement relève en particulier des compétences de l'anthropologie, de l'histoire des sciences, de la philosophie, et même de la littérature qui s'est intéressée à sa façon à ces questions. Les traverse l'hypothèse suivante : les contenus auxquels ces questions se rapportent, si différents soient les plans sur lesquels (...) ils se situent, ont en commun de n'exister qu'"à l'essai", c'est-à-dire en cours d'élaboration, en travail, dans l'effort, à la peine, à travers des formes inachevées, donc en étant confrontés en permanence au risque de la crise, ce qui n'empêche qu'ils soient entraînés dans un élan continu sans qu'on sache où celui-ci conduit ni même s'il conduit quelque part. Or, pour rendre compte de ces réalités en devenir, marquées d'incertitude à un certain degré, le mieux était de procéder identiquement "à l'essai", en lançant une dynamique d'investigation qui ne suive pas un chemin déjà tout tracé conformément à un idéal de rectitude. De là une démarche systématiquement sinueuse, appuyée sur des lectures pratiquées comme autant d'expérimentations qui mettent à l'épreuve, cas par cas, l'hypothèse de départ telle qu'elle vient d'être évoquée. Sont ainsi esquissés, pour voir, sous réserve d'examen, les linéaments d'une philosophie pratique qui permet d'évacuer certaines alternatives traditionnelles comme celles du réel et de la pensée, du corporel et du mental, des faits et des valeurs, de la nature et de la culture, de la nécessité et de la liberté"--Page 4 of cover. Hans Jonas (1903-1993), philosophe juif allemand, eleve de Husserl, Heidegger et Bultmann, ami de Hannah Arendt, successivement etabli en Palestine, au Canada et a New-York, a elabore une pensee originale, trop souvent recue dans la dispersion. On le connait tantot pour ses travaux sur la Gnose, tantot pour son livre Le Concept de Dieu apres Auschwitz, ou encore sa biologie philosophique, ou enfin le principe responsabilite qu'il a formule. On se propose ici d'exposer les grands themes de cette oeuvre - (...) le nihilisme gnostique, l'enracinement dans le monde materiel, la refondation ethique - en prenant le concept de vie pour fil directeur parce qu'il donne a cette oeuvre plurielle son foyer et son unite. C'est en effet la decouverte d'un air de famille entre l'esprit de la Gnose et la pensee heideggerienne de l'existence qui conduit Hans Jonas a prendre conscience de l'oubli de la vie par la philosophie et a en repenser le concept dans un dialogue avec les donnees de la biologie. Fort d'une philosophie de la vie ainsi concue, il peut alors prendre en charge les defis contemporains lances par la technique en proposant une ethique de la responsabilite, qui fixe des obligations a l'egard de la vie et des generations futures. Eric Pommier est professeur agrege et docteur en philosophie de l'Universite Paris I Pantheon Sorbonne.
